The International Microwave Symposium in past years has included several events targeted for participation by students. Among these events has been the Student Design Competition. The Student Design Competition presents an opportunity for the students to demonstrate mastery of microwave engineering principles in meeting predetermined design requirements for an interesting set of microwave problems.

These Design Competitions, Sponsored by the Microwave Theory and Techniques Society's Technical Coordination Committees in partnership with leading technical companies involved in microwave engineering. These competitions help the sponsoring companies an opportunity to identify strong graduate students and programs for the future development of both the students and the sponsoring companies.

We will continue with this tradition of conducting these competitions at IMS2013.

We are very pleased to be able to present the list of Student Design Competitions shown in the following table. These competitions are designed by the respective Competition Co-coordinators to provide an opportunity for student competitors to showcase their creative skills on a wide variety of topics. We are now accepting submissions by students in these Student Design Competitions. The deadline for submitting your application to the Competition Coordinators is Monday, 1 April 2013. The design entries will be judged by the Technical Committee Sponsors at IMS2013 on Tuesday, 4 June 2013. The winning entries will be recognized at the Student Awards Luncheon to be held on Thursday, 6 June 2013. The winning design teams will be invited to submit an article to IEEE Microwave Magazine in order to share their design techniques and experience with the greater microwave community.

General Competition Rules:

  • To enter a competition, the student(s) must have been a full-time student (enrolled for a minimum of nine hours per term as graduate students or twelve hours per term as undergraduates) during the time the work was performed.
  • The student(s) must have a signed statement from their academic adviser that the work is principally the effort of the student(s).
  • The student(s) must register for and attend the conference to present their design for evaluation at IMS2013, Tuesday, 1 April 2013.
  • The student(s) should use the email address issued by their respective institutions for all communication regarding the competitions, rather than their personal emails (e.g., Gmail, Hotmail).
